Methane for cars, price quadrupled

Methane for cars, price quadrupled

CREMONA – In some service stations in the provincial territory it has reached four euros per kilogram (precisely 3.99), when in February the price was 0.98 cents. The last very heavy increase, a dry euro, is a few days ago.

The gas crisis also affects the price of methane for transport. At the beginning of the week just ended, the cost for users was 2.99 euros. In the city and in the area, the cost at the pump has substantially quadrupled due to the energy crisis.

LPG has also gone up, but not that heavily: today it stands at around 0.8 euros per kilogram. As for petrol and diesel, the first can be found around 1.7-1.8 euros per liter, the second continues to cost 10, 15 cents more per liter. An anomaly that recently the operators of the service stations have attributed exclusively to the speculation of the producers.

Returning to methane, the skyrocketing price obviously creates very heavy consequences for users and operators in the sector. «In the face of this hallucinatory increase in the price of gas, what remains in our pockets? Always 4.7 cents per kilogram ”, he underlines disconsolately Dario Festari, for 35 years at the helm of the service station in via Treviglio, today Keropetrol, the only one in Crema to supply methane.

Another refueling opportunity a stone’s throw from Crema is the Madignano petrol station, along the Paullese. “The result of this situation is that hardly anyone comes to fill up with methane anymore, luckily we also supply diesel, petrol and LPG, otherwise I would have to close – continues Festari -: only those who have latest generation gas cars, therefore with petrol tanks that have a capacity of a few liters, are forced to continue. However, most CNG vehicles are dual fueled. It is clear that it is much cheaper to use petrol, which stops below 1.7 euros per liter ».

There are several latest generation methane models, especially from German houses. The owners put their hands in their hair. «They had bought the car a year or two ago thinking they would save a lot and take advantage of not paying the road tax. Now they find themselves with unsustainable operating costs – continues Festari -: on the other hand, if they have to travel a few kilometers, they cannot rely only on a small 7-8 liter tank for petrol. For our part we can’t do anything about it, like all gas stations we are at the mercy of the prices imposed by the companies. Methane at € 4 is the only way not to work at a loss ».

In the months of June and July 2021 for the supply of gas for transport, Festari had paid 65 thousand euros. In the same months of this year the bill rose to 455,800 euros.

“We have just turned 35 years of activity – concludes Festari -: we have experienced different moments of difficulty, but we have never found ourselves in such a dramatic situation”. How to get out of it remains a puzzle, it being understood that the national organizations that group methane distributors have already contacted the government to ask to intervene in this sector.

Those with single-product petrol stations could be forced to close in a matter of weeks. “The increases, depending on the subject, are around figures such as 40 or 60%. Methane, on the other hand, has seen its price increase twelve times ”, underline the trade organizations. At the level of public transport, the situation seems more manageable.

In the neighboring areas there are public companies in great difficulty, for example Brescia, where the buses are overwhelmingly gas powered.

In the province, on the other hand, Autoguidovie is not much affected by the problem linked to the out-of-control price increase of methane. In fact, 98% of the buses in the fleet in service in the Cremasco and other areas of the Cremona area are powered by diesel. In many cases these are the latest generation vehicles, with Euro 5 or Euro 6 engines. The effects of expensive fuels are therefore less impactful. Only the Miobus, the on-call minibus that operates in Crema and in various towns of Cremasco, connecting them to the city, travels on methane. It is a nine-seater vehicle that therefore has more limited consumption than the standard bus with over 50 seats.
