Friuli in the grip of gas: in the region the highest consumption in the whole North and winter is now even more scary

We are addicted to gas. More than others. And we will probably suffer, more than others. The data concerning Friuli Venezia Giulia are pitiless: there is not a single other region in the whole of Northern Italy that at present is closely linked to natural gas supplies like ours. To give an example, Lombardy has ten times (approximately) the inhabitants of Friuli Venezia Giulia but in proportion it is much more virtuous and does not consume at all ten times the gas that is “devoured” between Trieste, Udine, Pordenone and Gorizia.

We start with the “dry” data of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Our region consumes about two billion cubic meters of gas every year. To be precise, the billions are 2.1 in the latest survey. A small percentage compared to the approximately 75 billion cubic meters “eaten” by national needs, but enormous if we consider the performance of other regions, especially in the North. And this is a figure that has been decreasing very little in recent years, while in other areas it has been possible to reduce dependence on gas in a more incisive and above all faster way. Returning to the differences between the regions, it is here that the situation in Friuli Venezia Giulia becomes more difficult. According to the latest survey by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, in fact, Veneto consumed 5.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas, therefore methane, in one year. The problem? Veneto has four times the inhabitants of Friuli Venezia Giulia and if it followed the same volume of consumption it would have “eaten” about eight billion cubic meters. Even more striking is the comparison with Lombardy, which has ten million inhabitants (Fvg about 1.2) but which has requested and consumed proportionally less gas, that is 16 billion cubic meters over 12 months. Trentino Alto Adige, which shares with Friuli Venezia Giulia the mountainous areas where the heating comes into operation first, is also able to consume much less gas, to be precise less than a billion cubic meters a year.

Gas, from sanctions to the EU ceiling to the price: parties divided. Party recipes for the energy crisis

Few renewables, a lot of (too much) tradition in construction. Friuli is in difficulty in the face of an autumn that promises sparks from the point of view of energy costs. According to the data released by the region – and here we are – as much as 83 percent of all thermal plants in the area work thanks to the contribution of natural gas. District heating, for example, does not even reach 0.5 percent. In second place is diesel with 6 per cent, then LPG by a few tenths. Pellets are worth only 0.17 percent of regional consumption. All this is made even heavier by the fact that about 80 percent of buildings do not fall into the three highest energy classes. A considerable dispersion is therefore also paid.

Data broken down by province are also available. It turns out then that the territory of Udine “eats” more gas, the one that also discounts the fact that it has more municipalities in the mountain area. Central Friuli consumes data at hand 1.44 billion cubic meters per year. In second place is Pordenone with 268 million cubic meters. Then Trieste with 257 million and Gorizia to close with 134 million cubic meters of gas over twelve months. Finally, the destination of methane on the regional territory: most of the flow reaches homes through the network (approximately 800 million cubic meters). In second place the industries, then the thermoelectric.
