Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, clowns invade Gamescom

At Gamescom 2022, the writers of Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game previewed their relaunch of the 80’s horror classic.

“Friday the 13th was the fuse, but Killer Klowns will be the flame,” says Randy Greenback, a former developer of Friday 13th: the Game who is now working on a similar transposition of another ’80s horror classic. A low-budget film made by the Chiodo Brothers, Killer Klowns from Outer Space is exactly what the title suggests. Klowns are killer aliens who look like terrifying clowns (even their spaceship resembles a circus tent) and arrive on Earth with the sole aim of capturing humans, trapping them in cotton candy cocoons, and using a straw to suck the blood. If it sounds trashy, meaningless and disturbing to you, that’s exactly what made it unique.

L’preview of Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game will explain how the authors take exactly this premise and transform it into an online multiplayer video game, in which the goal is to capture humans as Klowns or use ingenuity and teamwork to get rid of the cursed alien clowns once and for all.

Even if Killer Klowns from Outer Space is in the hands of a substantially different team, Randy Greenback does not hide what is the clear starting point for the realization of the new project. When we met him at Gamescom 2022, the developer mentioned Friday 13th: the Game several times, to underline the (many) similarities between the two games and highlight the most important differences.

Like Friday, Killer Klowns is also a asymmetrical multiplayer gamein which seven human players must work together to survive the threat of three dangerous Klowns, in turn controlled by a second team.

The first important difference, however, lies in the number of players on the side of the bad guys. “On Friday 13th the player controlling Jason was alone against everyone,” says Greenback. “It was too big a responsibility for one person, and to have a chance to win you had to be very good. In Killer Klowns, on the other hand, you can play a little more relaxed, and if you are not particularly capable as a Klown, you can always rely on the your teammates “. However, escaping three enemies instead of one changes the level of alertness and anxiety of human players. “If in Friday 13th you happen to see Jason attacking a teammate you are anxious, sure, but at least you are calm because you know that he is far from you. In Killer Klowns there are three enemies, and even if you see one or two in distance, the third party could be behind you at any time “.

The classes

Both Klowns and human players can choose between five different classes, each characterized by special abilities and strengths. For example, the scout can reveal hidden areas of the map and allow companions to track down humans; the tracker can instead study the surroundings with the use of a small drone, or it is able to inflate a balloon, give it the shape of a dog and send it in search of the nearest enemies. There’s even an invisible car that you can use to quickly turn the map and run over other players. “If you want, you can inflate a dog balloon and take it with you as you move around in the invisible car,” adds Greenback. “Humans can still pop the dog from afar. That sounds a little bad, but the game is chock full of goodies like this.” Similar speech for humans, who can control teens (more stealthy but less resilient), punks (more agile), cops (more effective with guns), bikers (loud but loud), and rednecks (able to carry more items ).

Regardless of class, each Klown is equipped with a pistol that traps humans in a cotton candy cocoon, ready to be picked up and transported to the spaceship. When you are paralyzed inside a cocoon, you do not remain idle: the player can decide whether to die instantly (however giving a point to the opponents) or he can try to ask for the help of other players by making noise and wiggling, which might attract the attention of some clown nearby. If in possession of a knife, he can finally try to free himself.

At this point you will have understood where this is headed: the Klowns win the game by capturing as many humans as possible or by killing most of them; conversely, the round goes to Grounders if they manage to survive most of the Crescent Cove dwellers, escape the map, or disable the opposing ship. Each match has a fixed number of citizens scattered around the city and controlled by the game, but once a human player loses his life he can decide to return to the game as one of the remaining citizens. As a result, Klowns could start hunting and killing all game-controlled dwellers, in order to immediately limit the number of respawns available to human players.

At the end of the meeting, the development team also told us something about plans to support the game after the official launch. “There first season it will be set in the United States of 1988, but with subsequent ones we will explore other places and other eras, “Greenback tells us.” We have some crazy ideas, and there will be updates that will lead people to wonder ‘where the hell have I gone?’ ” Ok, when are the Pagliacci-killers in feudal Japan?

Despite being completely redone on Friday 13th, Killer Klowns from Outer Space tries to take advantage of a bizarre but not very well known license to propose an asymmetrical multiplayer game with its own identity and that was a bit different from its main source of inspiration. . It may not necessarily succeed, but for some, the madness and comedy of the imaginary might be enough to turn them into a cocoon of cotton candy when the game releases on PC, PlayStation and Xbox early next year.

CERTAINTIES

  • The crazy license exploited to the core
  • Three enemies instead of just one make the experience more interesting

DOUBTS

  • A simple rebranding of Friday 13th?
  • How much the human class weighs on game strategy is still unclear
